Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media in addition to a public speaking Canadian. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency which is a website with videos and comments discussing the depictions of females in pop media. Anita Sarkeesian has been a blogger, journalist and award-winning feminist for more than a decade. She is the founder as well as the executive director for Feminist Frequency an educational not-for-profit website which explores the portrayals of women within popular stories of culture. In her efforts to dispel the myths that are associated with females in popular culture, she works to highlight issues related to targeted harassment against women, as well as the marginalized groups of people in the online world. Sarkeesian holds a Masters in Political and Social Thinking at York University. As a public speaker, she is popular and has been a speaker at TEDxWomen XOXO, TEDxWomen and United Nations Broadband Working Group. Interested in issues concerning gender identities and feminisms from her early years, she founded her site Feminist Frequency in 2009 when she was studying at the University. A woman who was ambitious was planning to launch a web series which would explore how gender is represented in games. However, she found herself the target of an internet harassment campaign. It didn't deter her, rather it bolstered her resolve as feminists who criticize media. For the many accomplishments she's made to feminist movements, she has been the recipient of numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian, a media critic, has been awarded numerous awards and created Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit organisation that studies how women are portrayed in popular media narratives.
